I’m In Love

February 19, 2007 at 9:15 pm (Kate Nash, Lilly Allen, Moshi Moshi, Tilly And The Wall)

So I’ve been seeing Kate Nash’s name around a lot recently but only got round to seeing her last week and promptly fell in love. She’s amazing, seriously really really good BUT stylistically people are going to herald her as the next Lilly Allen which I think will only damage her career. Download these songs and pretend that you never heard silly Allen – I’ve seen Lilly a bunch and to be honest she’s not a great singer, she has to sing quietly to keep in tune – Kate has a really great voice and her songs are much more sincere than Lilly’s – plus on Shit Song she plays the piano riff from Sweet Harmony which is amazing.

Kate Nash – Dickhead

Kate Nash – Little Red

Kate Nash – Shit Song

Kate Nash – The Nicest Thing

I think these songs were demos from her myspazz – I think her single came out today on Moshi Moshi records – go here to buy it – its a double A side of Caroline’s A Victim (which is much more electro) and Birds (which is fucking beautiful).

She has a gig coming up supporting Tilly And The Wall – you know when you see footage of screaming girls passing out and going mental at Justin Timberlake gigs and stuff – well I’m gonna be the boy version of that at the gig!

Dreams Of Santa Ana

February 12, 2007 at 11:01 pm (Babe Ruth, Bumrocks, Jellybean, The Mexican)

I found these tunes the other day – the Babe Ruth tune was one of my uni classics – I remember the first time I heard the Dirtchamber mix on the radio and Liam Howlett mixed some old electro over it – ooweeee. Anyway so looking on some P2P site for it I found this Jellybean version – its straight Bumrocks – hows about another post dedicated to the wonder that it Bumrocks.com.

Babe Ruth – The Mexican

Jellybean – The Mexican

I used to DJ with a couple of guys that owned a record shop and John used to play this amazing balearic tune called Winds Of Santa Ana thats got the same tune – I can never find it anywhere and I don’t know who its by – anyone got any suggestions hit me back.

[UPDATE] – oh cool, so I was just looking to see who the Jellybean people where and it turns out the tune was released on Tommy Boy – I thought it sounded a bit like this Power Jam 85 record that I used to love (when I first heard Chromeo I thought they were old school Tommy Boy) – anyway I just found this tune by random. Its a cheesy disco tune but a cover of The Mexican no less – sweeeeeet.

Disco Circus – The Mexican

[UPDATE2] OK so wikipedia has some info on Babe Ruth and look what I found on you tube – AAAARGH this is toooo goood. Thissong is so perfec, the drunks, the guitar, the bass and the vocals – all amazing.

Some Good Stuff

February 7, 2007 at 12:08 am (Baby Huey, Bumrocks, Dave Mancuso, Larry Levan, Magma)

To those that dissed me for posting pictures of my t-shirts as lazy – fuck you (dedicated to Bumrocks.com)

So its not all doom and gloom over in the Stupid Hat Towers – I’ve been listening to some amazing music of late – and not just good hype music but music that stirs the soul and reminds you why you started listening to music in the first place .

Hard Times by Baby Huey has been a staple of mine for a long time – back in Bristol it was a classic but we really only played it because it had been sampled by so many hip hop people – recently I’ve been listening to it from another angle – that of a man that finds no love in this crazy town  – my favorite lyric is towards the end where he says ‘eating spam, and Oreos and drinking Thunderbird baby’ – too good.

Bumrocks.com is a site I’ve been banging on about for ages – seriously I love this site – it might be my favorite blog and defo my favorite podcast – they don’t post up any information about the songs – its just a song a day – but seriously its like they bought up all Dave Mancuso‘s and Larry Levan‘s personal record collections and are just sifting through – everyday I get a new tune and seriously I’ve 99% of the time never ever even heard of the songs or artists – seriously I can’t tell you enough times to go and add this to your podcast list – seriously seriously seriously.

Baby Huey – Hard Times

Magma – KA III   (stolen from Bumrocks.com – go there to get more good stuff)

I’m Bored!

February 6, 2007 at 10:52 pm (Bored)

Yeah yeah I know ‘there’s no such thing as being bored only boring people’ – but what if I’m bored of coming off the tube and reading about how some young boy has been shot in his bedroom, only days after reading about how another young boy was shot dead on an ice rink? – how about if I’m bored of having a farewell drink with one of my best mates, days before he leaves the country for years, to start a new job / life only to be interupted by his flatmate calling to say that they’ve been burgled and his passport and new laptop have been stolen? –  how about if I’m just bored of being scared of walking home every night because of the growing number of yellow police signs reminding me of another stabbing or shooting in my neighbourhood? – how about if I’m just bored of working for people who can’t get their shit together, for people that can’t pay me right?  – how about if I’m bored of having no heating when everyone is shouting about how its going to snow tomorrow? – seriously does that make me a boring person? Am I allowed to be bored of those things? It doesn’t matter what anyone thinks – I am bored!

Not The Type Of Jumper That Makes You Itches

January 29, 2007 at 12:29 am (Orbital, Sultans Of Ping)

So there’s a little story to these tunes. Age 13 I found myself at boarding school having been kicked out of a couple of places – the school was super nice  – a place  for kids who were dyslexic  and who’s parents were in the Forces – then there was us – the bad kids – the round pegs – anyway – it was back in the time when rave mixtapes would be passed around (92) and beastie boys tapes weren’t for the masses. I used to get bullied by a kid called Andrew who was super into Sultans Of Ping – he used to dress in all krusty type garb and tell everyone he was an anarchist. Funny – I think it was quite a poilitical time back then (or maybe people liked to pretend)  – anyway here’s a tune from back then.

Sultans Of Ping – Where’s Me Jumper

So it was also the time of the traveller – one time at school a bunch of travellers camped near the school and when we all snuck out at midnight for cigarettes  we could hear they’re music – we went down to they’re camp the next day and said hello to them – at the time Galaxy chocolate had an ad that said ‘Why have cotton when you could have silk’ – anyway one of the travellers said to us that they were just ‘floating on the breeze like a piece of cotton’ and Charlie responded ‘Why have cotton when you can have silk’ – we left pretty sharpish but this was the tune they played over the heath when we were smoking outside.

Orbital –  Forever

Yeah so I’ve been thinking and loving about this hobby for a while but yeah its photos of ‘no photo’ signs. I was thinking today about extending it to signs in galleries that tell you to do stuff or maybe even just signs everywhere that tell you not to do stuff like no smoking or no skating etc but I’m a keep it to no photo.

Here’s one from the Japan Centre…

And then another from the National Gallery……

Sunday Gallery Walks

January 28, 2007 at 9:19 pm (Great Exhibition, James Brown, Madlib, National Gallery, Samuel Peyps, Serpentine, Stones Throw, Will Self)

So today I took my ass to The Serpentine, The Science Musuem, The Natural History Musuem, The V&A and The National Gallery. Daaaayyyyyums thats a lot of art. I bumped into Will Self again at the Natural History Museum – I think we could be friends without the heroin – if I see him again I’m gonna try and engage him in literary / second life chat.

This thing was cool but I couldn’t work out who it was by, it was in the V&A, then I went upstairs to see some old school stuff and saw this…….

Its a stained glass thing of Samuel Peyps – I wanted to take a photo of this amazing book of his that had this amazing illustrations but it was behind glass. I watched a film about The Great Exhibition of 1851 – shit looked so cool. So here’s a little tune for y’all – King Heroin by James Brown – first heard this on a Madlib Stones Throw podcast – I’ll dedicate this to Will Self and Mr Dynamite hisself JB.

James Brown – King Heroin
