Back From NY – joy!

November 12, 2006 at 8:12 pm (Blogs, random, Songs)

restless.jpgOh joy! Back on my sofa – sweet! I’m all a bit janky from the flight but when I landed I had mypod on random and Young & Restless came on – the perfect thing to wake me up. They’re from Melbourne and they’re a bit more metal thank disco-punk – maybe heavy disco punk.

Young & Restless – Satan

Young & Restless – Dirty Kicks

I’m glad they came on as I’ve been meaning to post about Invasion for a while now. They’re all maybe a little bit Polish and make kind of pop art metal. I think it sounds like Afirampo meet Yeah Yeah Yeahs although I’ve heard much better references that I can’t bring to mind. Anyway the singer is great, a bit mad but very hot.

Invasion – Red Dawn
Invasion – The Uplink Is Down

Mixtape Monday Postponed

October 2, 2006 at 8:35 pm (Blogs, Classics, Future Classic, Mixtape, random)

butters.jpgSorry for being lame and not having a Mixtape Monday for you guys today, I’ve got a couple of special Stupid Hat mixes being made by various people but you know how DJ’s are with deadlines – also I haven’t been chasing too much as the beatdown has knocked me a little sideways.

Anyway I can tell you that you need to get the Stones Throw podacsts as the latest one is a mix of Turkish funk by Egon – I had the pleasure of attending a rooftop party in LA when Egon was playing and seriously he killed it – just playing all sorts of Turkish, Ethiopian and who knows what funk – subscribe to it here.

The nice people over at Ghostly International have thrown a couple of treats our way – to be honest I don’t know anything about Chris Willits but both Yellow Spring (from his forthcoming solo album) and Shimokitazawa Face (from the just released collaboration with Brad Laner) are amazing. Yellow Spring is a beautiful, intense piece of electronica in the vein of Fourtet or Dabrye. Shimokitazawa Face is a lot harder and could be mistaken for thinking it was a collab between Josh Homme and David Holmes. Both should be played very loud on a late night drive into the desert.

Christopher Willits – Yellow Spring

North Valley Subconscious Orchestra – Shimokitazawa Face

Purchase the North Valley Subconscious Orchestra album from Ghostly here and the Chris Willits album is out on 17th October.

Also I am very excited to announce the return of South Park, the Season 10 premier is Wednesday eve in the states which means that here in the UK you’ll have to get your internet on on Thursday (lunchtime I would suggest). Youtube have the trailer here – awesome.Oh and if you’re lucky you’ll be able to download an amazing Bmore Club mix of Justin Timberlake’s ‘My Love’ from Discobelle before the link runs out.

Who Or What Is An Oxy Cottontail?

September 20, 2006 at 6:54 pm (Mixtape, random, Summer Banger!!!)

Oxy!Sorry I’ve been so lame recently and not posting so much, the stupid customer service has somehow drained me of any motivation but I think I’m getting it back. I’m actually really annoyed at myself as I’ve been meaning to post about Oxy for a while now and then Pitchfork comes along and reviews the single. What annoys me most is not that they got there first but the review is actually really on point and pretty much what I was going to say – read it here.

I went back to my parents the other day and noticed that the first bookmark on my dads bookmarks toolbar was Stupid Hat – its really cool that my dad reads this blog but then it makes me feel a bit odd when I use words like c*nt or cl*t but I want I really want to know is what happens when Oxy heads back to her mom’s house in the burbs

‘hey mom, I made a new tune’

‘oh thats nice dear whats it about? Is it one of those hippy hoppy songs you kids listen to’

‘yeah kinda mom, I rap about coke and how my p*ssy is always wet’

‘oh thats nice dear’

Check Oxy in her undies at lastnightsparty here.

So I was chatting to my mate about the blog and he said he really liked it but that maybe it could do with a bit of brightening up so we’re gonna test drive having photos on her – lemme know what you think?

Chicken In A Box

August 24, 2006 at 4:20 pm (chicken noodle soup, Classics, random)

All this talk of 1995 got me remembering another tune that ‘ve been meaning to post for a while. I was in Fopp and picked up a Mr Scruff album called Mrs Cruff – its a collection of a lot of his earlier works and things that were only ever released on vinyl. Its still very listenable but not as exciting as I remember it being at the time. My favorite was always Chicken In A Box, the intro was hilarious and I was constantly eating chicken in a bun from Morleys – mmmm sweet chilli sauce.

Mr Scruff – Chicken In A Box

You can buy it from the Ninja Tune shop here

Beat Generation

August 24, 2006 at 1:21 am (chicken noodle soup, Classics, Future Classic, random, Songs, Summer Banger!!!)

So Jay Dee’s first posthumous release was a couple of days ago. The Shining which I haven’t heard but features a whole host of dope MCs. Its released on BBE and his first album for them made the whole Beat Generation series known. A lesser known cut is ‘The Beat Generation’ by Tha 4orce. I think it was only released on a 12″ but its a really good tune. He kind of dissapeared after its release but I’m sure I saw something about a new album somewhere.

Tha 4orce – The Beat Generation

Cop Tha 4orce ‘Mind The Gap Anthems’ from CD Baby here and Dilla’s new album from Other Music here

So Plastic Little hail from Philly and make some really nice beatsy hip hop and the best thing is that they’re the first people I’ve ever heard sample PJ Harvey. The King Honey remix is a proper club banger that samples a tune that I can’t recollect at the moment.

Plastic Little – Hey Bitches! (King Honey Remix)

Plastic Little ft. Spank Rock & Diplo – Now I Holler

Cop some tunes and pre-order the album from their site here

Anyone up for ESG meets The Slits produced by Liquid Liquid???? Well if you are then you’ll love Ebony Bones – I haven’t seen her yet but she has a gig at the Old Blue Last on Friday and I intend to be there.

Ebony Bones – Don’t Fart On My Heart

Ebony Bones – I’m Ur Future X-Wife

Friend her up on myspace here to find out more gigs and whe tunes will be released.

And last but by no means least I have a new tune from Red Setter AKA Dom who used to sing for Bronze Age Fox. Its a beautiful little hip waggler of a tune entitled B.O.P.O.T.M which roughly translates as Birds Of Pray On The Motorway. I fucking love Dom’s voice and he’s always had this irreverant but beautiful lyrical style – just wicked.

Red Setter – B.O.P.O.T.M

Head over to Mr Setter’s myspace here for more downloads and to be his friend.

Even More Stupid Silly Crazy Fresh Tunes

August 17, 2006 at 8:39 pm (Classics, Future Classic, Mixtape, random, Summer Banger!!!)

So I was checking Analog Giant yesterday and he had some remixes by some dude from Austin called Bird Peterson. Now I’d never heard of him before but I recently got into that track Baba O’Riley after reading some post on Riffmarket. So anyway I checked the tunes out and they’re soooooo good. 2 of them are kinda straight B’more remixes but the Spank Rock is some filthy Timbaland-esque hip hop – fucking dope.

The Who – Baba O’Riley (Bird Peterson Baltimore Wasteland)

The Temptations – Aint Too Proud To Beg (Bird’s Bmore Remix)

Spank Rock – Chilly Will (Bird Peterson Remix)

Anyway the Temptations rinse got me thinking about that Cosmo Baker mix of Papa Was A Rolling Stone, from Motherfucking Remix 2.1, which is fresh.

The Temptations – Papa Was A Rolling Stone (Cosmo Baker Applause Remix)

I got thinking about the Applause riddim and Spragga Benz kills it on this.

Spragga Benz – Run Tings

But my all time favorite riddim is the Showtime riddim – wooooooot, dayums its Carnival next weekend – for all y’all overseas, bang these tunes on, crack open a Red Stripe and get low.

Rayvon & Red Fox – Bashment Party

Bounty Killa – Eagle And The Hawk

Beenie Man – Hypocrite

Wayne Wonder – Searchin Dem Searchin

I Love Tuesdays – White Heat

August 15, 2006 at 11:11 am (Future Classic, random, Songs)

White Heat is a really rather cool indie disco that takes place every Tuesday at Madam Jojo’s in London town. With queues generally round the block made up of fashionable indie teens which are usually justified as they have some seriously good bands playing there. I missed You!Say!Party! We!Say!Die! there a while ago and tonight they have Voxtrot and Sunny Day Sets Fire who make pretty indie that sounds like its from Canada but really they’re from London via Rome and Hong Kong. They released Wilderness as a 7″ which is all sold out now. Check their myspace for more info.

Sunny Day Sets Fire – Wilderness

Sunny Day Sets Fire – Lack Of View

Electro Pop Niceness

August 14, 2006 at 4:07 pm (Future Classic, random, Summer Banger!!!)

A few extra treats for you today. Dead Disco are three girls from Leeds who make Blondie inspired dancefloor schmindie – they have a single coming out soon on Fierce Panda and this is a lovely remix by a French man who I know nothing about! Protokoll are four boys who met in Boston and they make nice synthy dancefloor business that supposedly sounds like Bauhaus (who I’ve never listened to but maybe should). They’ve been getting a lot of love from Zane Lowe and Steve Lamacq and they have an album coming out soon on iheartcomix records. Chris Price is one man out of DC who makes electro pop niceness

Dead Disco – Automatic (Raufaust Remix)

Protokoll – Moving Forward (Fury666 Remix)

Chris Price – And She Was

You’ll be able to cop the Dead Disco single from Fierce Panda in September here and you can cop some Chris Price on itunes here Your best bet to cop some Protokoll is to add iheartcomix on myspazz and they’ll let you know whats up.

Stunna Shades

August 11, 2006 at 12:08 pm (Classics, random, Summer Banger!!!)

So last nights party was wicked – me an’ Toby played some nice jams that finished with Sweet Love by M Beat – classic. Casper brought some nice electro business and Clit Vs Sinden was just too good. Anyway jam of the night must go to Stunna Shades, pretty much everyone played it once. I think its the semi electro intro that gives it that edge – I played it right after some Larry Levan remix of Grace Jones and it worked too well.

Federation ft E40 – I Wear My Stunna Shades At Night

Corey Hart – I Wear My Sunglasses At Night

Grace Jones – Pull Up To The Bumper (Larry Levan Garage Remix)

Big Ups to Toby, Casper, Graeme and Yohanne.

August 8, 2006 at 9:48 am (Classics, Future Classic, random, Summer Banger!!!)

So its the 100 year anniversary of the birth of Sir John Betjeman who was Poet Laureate from 1973 until his death in 1984, and I was reading somewhere that young scruffian troubadour Jamie T had sampled one of Betjeman’s tune on his latest single.

Jamie T – Shelia (demo)

Sir John Betjeman – The Cockney Amorist

Shelia samples The Cockney Amorist which is typical Betjeman recording – all postwar tea room swing and his inimitable old school British accent talking over the top. This is also a very insightful tune as Betjeman was instrumental in the creation of the Shell Guides which promoted weekend driving trips to churches and places of interest either side of the Second World War. His was an era of village fetes, tea with mother, healthy tennis playing girls and train stations.

Sir John Betjeman – Eunice

Sir John Betjeman – Myfanwy And Myfanwy At Oxford

I really like Jamie T and he really reminds me of my other favorite troubled poet junkie Pete – I recently found this tune and its amazing, not only does he keep shouting the chorus too loud but towards the end he starts to make little trumpet noises along to his song – soo sweet.

Pete Doherty – Don’t Look Back Into The Sun (acoustic)

It wouldn’t be fair to chat about poetry without mentioning Youngblood Brass Band. Lead vocalist Dave is never to be found without a couple of books on stanzas or some complicated structural poetry book. This is one of my favorite tunes of theirs and I’ve even seen Dave perform it as a straight poem which was awesome.

Youngblood Brass Band – Is An Elegy

The band have an arts collective called Layered which works to promote all sorts of arts in scholls from poetry (they’ve published a couple of Dave’s books) and they also go round to schools getting kids into playing instruments – nice. You can purchase Jamie T’s new single from CD Universe here, some Betjeman stuff from Amazon here and Youngblood Brass Band from their own website here. N.B this was not meant to be any sort of all encompassing piece about modern poetry in contemporary music, hopefully we’ll revisit this topic with some nice Saul Williams, Earl Zinger and Mike Ladd amongst others.

Long Post With Amazing Tunes

August 4, 2006 at 11:08 pm (Classics, Future Classic, Grumble Grumble, random, Songs)

So here I sit on a Friday night in Shoreditch with a peanut butter and marmite sandwich and a cup of tea. Rock and fucking roll. I went to see The Long Blondes this evening at the Tate Britain. All of the tickets to stand inside the ‘pen’ were gone so I watched from the otherside of a barrier which was alright. You couldn’t see them and the sound was shit but somehow they totally played through it and played my two favorite tunes. They’re signed to Rough Trade so at a guess I’d say they stock the new single in the shop.

The Long Blondes – Once And Never Again

The Long Blondes – Fulwood Babylon

They have such great lyrics and also the sentiment of the songs is so honest and true. I absolutely love them and I hope you do to. So last night I went to Help The Jaded at The Fly and saw Jack Penate playing rekkids – its was fucking wicked and he banged a bunch of quality hip hop, classic dancehall and some nice 60’s beat stuff. Anyway so I checked his myspace and the tunes are fucking wicked – very fresh in that Guillemots way but more indie ska. Big tings a gwan with this guy I predict.

Jack Penate – Torn On The Platform

Jack Penate – Learning Lines

Then this morning I was checking in on Riffmarket which is Nick Sylvester’s new blog. His old one was called Riffcentral and it was so good – he used to do fake interviews with people like Diplo or Animal Collective and make them come across as idoits. He used to write for the Village Voice but got kicked out over some shit, check Riffcentral for the final interview which has The Game interviewing Nick! So anyway he was dissing Coolfer and I headed over there and saw that Kemado had signed some band called Danava. Now I really like Kemado so I went to the bands myspace and grabbed a couple of tunes:

Danava – Quiet Baby’s Astray In A Manger

Danava – Jack

Whilst listening to the tunes (proggy old school metal) I was checking through their comments and saw one from Glass Candy saying that production on one of the tracks was almost done and how Chromatics had done a rap remix or something. Hmmm maybe Glass Candy are producing the record?. So I went to check out Chromatic’s myspace and downloaded the most beautiful song I’ve heard in ages. Just a little click track and some piano and this hushed voice singing about someone crying themselves to sleep. Beware – unless you are in a stable emotional state don’t listen to this.

Chromatics – Baby

So I was listening to this tune on repeat whilst standing by the Thames waiting to meet some friends for the Long Blondes gig and thinking about how amazing myspace and the tinternet is for finding new bands and I remembered something that I’ve been meaning to post for a while. Gym Class Heroes are an indie hip hop band from NY. Its roughly in the same vein as Cage, nice lyrics and delivery but its the subject of one of their tunes that really got me. New Friend Request is a story about how he meets some girl on myspace and she’s not reciprocating much but it really got me thinking about how many people can really relate to hip hop lyrics. Most people don’t live in the ghetto on the grind shifting kilos busting gats and pimpin hoes yet we all love it. What I love about this tune is lyrics like ‘checked my inbox 6 times and ain’t nuthin’ or ‘all I got is this powerbook and ichat, besides I hit you all the time but you never write back’ – genius and actually really good.

Gym Class Heroes – New Friend Request

Anyway that tune really reminds me of this other tune I’ve been banging for ages. Ayentee also sounds like Cage but the tune’s really good, lots of strings – check it.

Ayentee – 99% Peasant

Oh and Casper C has got a new mix up which you must get over at Fluokids. Absolutely wicked and now I have a reason to post that 187 Lockdown tune that I’ve been sitting on. SPEED GARAGE WOOOOOOOOOT!

187 Lockdown – Gunman

Right that should be enough for now – laters.

I fucking hate queueing!

July 29, 2006 at 12:49 am (Classics, Grumble Grumble, random, Songs, Summer Banger!!!)

So I was all ready to go and see my boys Radioclit play tonight at 333 – I’m on the list, everything is sweet. So I get there and speak to the g-list woman and she gives me a ticket and tells me that I have to get in the queue. Now I don’t mind queueing but after 20 minutes of waiting in line with every 17 year old pushing in front of me I’ve fucking had it. I told her so and it was like talking to some fucking phone operator at the gas company when they’ve cut you off – she was blissfully not in control. Another 5 minutes and I’m fucking walking home to type this – fuck them – all I wanted was to have a few beers with my boys – well fuck them – I’ll come home and diss your club on the internet like the hard man I am. Anyway I’m especially annoyed because DJ Luck and MC Neat were playing – around 2000 they were kind of big in the UK and I’m really glad that, as the whole early 90’s sounds are breaking through what with the big Rave Recycle, certain people have the foresight to start championing the early 00’s – big ups. I’ll see you at the bar for some more Sambucca! Happy Time!

DJ Luck and MC Neat – Master Blaster 2000

DJ Luck and MC Neat – A Little Bit Of Luck

DJ Luck and MC Neat – Ain’t No Stoppin Us

DJ Luck and MC Neat – Sambuca

Oh and so my friend is pissed that I nicked a post off him. The Martha Wainwright tune – however as I explained I’ve been into her for a while and to prove it here’s the tune about mashed potato. I’m sure I checked his post and was reminded of this tune so please go and check out my friend’s blog as its also really rather good Blog On The Motorway

Kate & Anna McGarrigle – I Eat Dinner.

New Ancient Strings

July 28, 2006 at 1:17 am (Classics, random, Songs, Summer Banger!!!)

So Toumani Diabate is a Kora payer from Mali, supposedly one of the greatest that has ever lived. I’ll let Wikipedia do the talking but I have a couple of stories. I used to work at a label where he was a frequent visitor and a friend of mine used to tell me stories of him missing a bunch of flights only to turn up at the office a few days later with no possessions other than his Kora slung over his back and not a care in the world. Anyway I recently rocked well to a birthday party out of town where I met a young man who’d recently tripped over to Africa and upon landing in Mali asked the taxi driver to take him to Toumani Diabate and he fucking arrived at his private residence and stayed for 3 weeks. Not only did Toumani put him up but he invited him on stage at a gig – shizz, not only is Toumani one bad ass Kora player but he’s NICE! Anyway so whilst listening to tonights Mahler me and my other friend were chatting about the origins of jazz and house and techno and how the slaves amalgamated European sounds and instrumentation with African rhythm’s and stuff but just listen to this tune and then the Prokefiev tune and tell me whats what – they’re both so amazing – and granted there’s a few hundred years between them but DAYUMS!!!!!!!! Not only is the Romeo and Juliet way ahead of its time but the Toumani tune is as fresh as any riddim this year. In fact FRESHER!!

Toumani Diabate – Kadiatou

Two best songs in the world

July 28, 2006 at 12:33 am (Classics, Future Classic, Grumble Grumble, random, Songs, Summer Banger!!!)

So a couple of weeks go the BBC Proms started. They take place over about two and a half months and there’s pretty much a concert every night. They were set up about 100 years ago by some dude who wanted classical music for everyone – every convcert has something like 1000 tickets reserved to buy on the door for £5. Its so fucking cool, the Albert Hall is beautifull and you get to sit up in the gallery where its all cool and just hang out. Me and my friend have been going a bunch and you just rock up with a bottle of wine or some beers and sit on the floor listening to amazing classical music. So I’ve always loved some classical but never really known what to look for but the other night I saw something amazing. It was Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet adapted for an orchestra and I’m telling you its the fucking shit. The best bit is a section called the Death of Tybalt and its so intense, with all these repetetive drums and violin stabs that put hairs on the back of your neck. Seriousl, this is what I call a power tun, one that you put on your pod when you step off the tube or subway and walk and it makes you feel 10ft tall, like Chin High by Roots Manuva.

A few days after seeing the Prokofiev I saw my favorite band of the moment Guillemots. They were playing at Love Box and it is testament to how lame the punters are there – they were playing on a huge fucking stage to about 100 people – DAYUMS what wrong with them – I don’t know where this tune comes from as its not on their EP or album but its seriously power (but not in a 10ft way)

Prokofiev – Romeo and Juliet ‘The Death of Tybalt’

The Guillemots – Sea

There are so many versions of Romeo and Juliet, I’ll let you find your own way but you can purchase the Gillemots debut from Fantastic Plastic Oh and because I’m all happy and drunk from seeing Mahler’s 4th at the Proms tonight and afterwoods I was singing this song so you can have it – beep beep

The Guillemots – Never Went To Church (The Streets Cover)

Oh and you should check the BBC here and you can find out what’s on and listen to it all online avec commentary. Happy Time!

The David Gilmour Girls are really rather good!

July 26, 2006 at 11:33 pm (Future Classic, Grumble Grumble, random, Songs, Summer Banger!!!, techno)

So I’ve been loving Jasper Uhl and Robin Van Der Kaa AKA The David Gilmour Girls for a while now, pretty much since their first release on Relish Records. Anyway my prediction is that they’re gonna be big and I mean LARGE. Who else has has the tenacity to make a tune that’s over 10 minutes long that starts off as an electro rock tune, then brakes into some serious Death From Above 1979 territory then goes into some minimal electro all ending in a feisty rock electro ending. DAYUMS! Oh and I found this other tune on their site which is amazing.

David Gilmour Girls – Heavy Metal Music Magazines

David Gilmour Girls – A Kraftwerk Orange
